World’s longest female mullet recorded

An American woman has grown a mullet that’s longer than she is tall, setting a Guinness World Record for a woman’s longest mullet.

Tami Manis from Tennessee hasn’t cut the back of her hair since 1990. In the 33 years since, it’s grown to 172.72 cm (5ft 8in).

The 58-year-old was inspired to start growing her hair in the 1980s when she saw a video by Til Tuesday called Voices Carry.

“The [singer] had a rattail and I really wanted one of those,” she said.

A barber convinced her to cut off the rattail in 1989 – but she immediately regretted it.

She decided to start growing it again; 9 February 1990 is her hair’s “official” birthday.

“I’ve been blessed that my hair grows and now it’s the world’s longest mullet and I’m very happy with it,” she said.

Most people don’t realise how long the back is until she turns around, she said.

Ms Manis normally keeps her hair braided because of its length, using a leave-in conditioner to make it easier to plait.

She said it was “pretty amazing” to make it into the book of Guinness World Record.

In 2022, Ms Manis competed in the “Femullet” division of the 2022 US Mullet Championships and finished in second place.

The US Mullet Championships is the largest competition of its kind in the world, drawing upwards of 1,000 applicants each year.
