Snow hits the North as heavy showers and gales expected

Snow blizzards have hit parts of the UK as heavy showers and blustery gales are forecast for most areas of the UK.

Buxton, Derbyshire, is one of the areas of the country that have been hit by the snow fall.

Further south in Leicestershire, one motorist was left stranded in floodwater in the early hours of Saturday following heavy downpours.

Firefighters used an inflatable sled to pull the driver from the floodwater at around 4.05am on Watery Gate Lane in the village of Thurlaston, and his Fiat 500 remains partially submerged in water.

The Met Office said more heavy rain, blustery gales and spots of sunshine are forecast for the rest of the weekend in most parts of the country.

The Environment Agency has issued 13 flood warnings where flooding is expected, as well as 130 flood alerts for areas where flooding is likely.

A potential for more snow lies ahead as temperatures drop over a “blustery weekend”, according to Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst.

Mr Dewhurst said: “Anyone who is out Christmas shopping will have to wrap up warmly.

“Over the high ground of northern England and Scotland, some places may have a covering of snow.

“Temperatures for most places will be between 3C (37.4F) and 7C (44.6F), with maximum temperatures of 10C (50F) in the South East where the best of the sunshine will be.

“We are also looking at wind gusts of 35 to 40mph.”

Watery Gate Lane, where a driver was rescued on Saturday, is notorious for flooding.

At least 19 people have been rescued from the road between 2014 and 2018, along with several more this year.

Blaby District Council said it wanted to install gates to stop drivers using the road when water levels are high earlier this month.
