The UK’s most googled terms of 2019

The Rugby World Cup – in which England lost the final – was the UK’s most googled search term of 2019.

Google has revealed its most searched terms of the year, with the tournament in Japan coming top as England climbed through the knock out stage to lose 32-12 to South Africa in the October final.

England’s impressive summer of sport meant the Cricket World Cup, held across England and Wales, was the second most googled query.

The team was luckier than its rugby counterparts, winning the tournament after a nail-biting Super Over against New Zealand in the final.

Sport was not the only thing gripping the nation, with Game of Thrones coming in as the third most googled query as the eight year TV drama series came to a controversial close.

Chernobyl, the HBO-Sky Atlantic series based on the 1986 nuclear disaster, came in fourth as it quickly became the highest-rated TV series of all time on IMDB.

Sticking to the screen, Thanos, the main character in 2019’s Avenger’s Endgame – the highest grossing film of all time – was the fifth most googled term, while the film itself came in at seven.

And people keen to see whether they wanted to purchase Apple’s latest release put the iPhone 11 at number eight.

Reality TV star and former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner made it to number nine on the list – ahead of any of the rest of her famous family – as she took part in I’m a Celebrity.

Bringing up the rear of the top 10 list was Joker, as Joaquin Phoenix took up the eponymous role previously played by the late Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight.

Google’s ‘how to’ search list was topped by ‘How to watch Champions League Final’ as fans scrambled to witness Tottenham lose 2-0 to Liverpool.

And extraterrestrials captured the top of the ‘what is’ list as ‘What is Area 51’ beat ‘what is the backstop’ after more than two million people responded to a joke proposal to storm the United States Air Force facility amid recent conspiracy theories.

R&B star R Kelly came top of the most googled musicians after he was arrested in July for sex crimes including child pornography, kidnapping and forced labour.
