100mph winds set to bring disruption to UK on Tuesday

Winds of up to 100mph are set to batter parts of the UK on Tuesday, forecasters have warned.

It follows Storm Atiyah which brought winds of up to 70mph to the southwest of England and Wales and caused disruption to transport and power networks in Ireland.

A severe yellow weather warning for wind is in place across northern England, North Wales, parts of Northern Ireland and much of Scotland, while a further yellow weather warning for rain covers western Scotland.

Delays are likely to road, rail, air and ferry transport, and short-term loss of power is possible in some areas, the Met Office warned.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “The strong winds are pretty widespread.

“It’s very windy in the west and south west so that’s where we’re going to see the greatest impact unfortunately.”

Western Power Distribution said it had experienced 26 high voltage faults in the southwest on Sunday.

There were also two in Wales, leading to 5,500 customers being cut off from power throughout the day.

At Culdrose in Cornwall, the wind hit 70mph in the hour leading up to 9pm on Sunday.

Coastsafe, a partnership campaign to improve coastline safety in the southwest, urged people to be wary of tidal surges and debris being thrown over sea walls during the storm.

Lane closures have been put in place on the M48 Severn Bridge due to increasing wind speeds.
