Heavy rain returns as parts of England face flooding

Flooding is expected for parts of England as heavy rain returns to sweep across the country, according to the Met Office.

More than two inches of rain could fall in some places within 12 hours on Monday, with yellow weather warnings being issued from Devon on the south coast to South Yorkshire.

The warnings are in place from midday on Monday afternoon to midnight, with cities under the warning including Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Portsmouth.

The wet weather will move northwards across England on Monday – with the heaviest rain is forecast for the afternoon and evening.

Around an inch is expected to fall across much of the region in the yellow weather warning, but Sky News weather producer Christopher England says other places could see more.

He said: “Many places in the warning area will see half an inch or so of rain, but we could see two to three inches in some parts.

“Localised flash flooding is possible, but probably nothing other than local disruption.”

Gusts of around 20 to 30mph are expected in East Anglia and along the coast in the North East.

“It’s looking pretty unsettled,” said the Met Office’s Mark Wilson, adding that the wet weather in England will push north throughout the day into southern Scotland.

“[The heavy rain] brings a risk of flooding and disruption, but the situation is uncertain, such that the likelihood of this across any given county is small.”
