‘World’s luckiest man’ survives lorry tyre smashing windscreen

A driver has been described as the “luckiest man in the world” after he escaped serious injury when a lorry’s wheel came off on the motorway and smashed through his windscreen.

The tyre detached from a HGV lorry on the M6 near Leyland in Lancashire and bounced over the central reservation before striking the man’s Peugeot, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver was able to pull over to the hard shoulder and only suffered minor injuries.

Lancashire Police shared pictures of the Peugeot’s shattered windscreen and collapsed roof and said it was “beyond” them as to how the driver managed to walk away following the incident.

In a tweet, police said: “The driver of this car is the luckiest person in the world right now.

“This tyre detached from an HGV on the M6 at jct28, crossed the central barrier & struck an oncoming vehicle.

“How they got it to the shoulder and got out is beyond us. Thankfully minor injuries.”

Police also revealed the incident could have been much worse as the driver had chosen not to bring his young son on the journey.

A photo showed the wheel had become lodged in the child’s seat in the back of the car – which luckily was unoccupied.

Lancashire Police wrote in a tweet: “The driver’s young son wanted to come out with dad.

“Thankfully he was unable to take him, but it doesn’t bear thinking about what would have happened had his son been in this car seat.”
